The Employee’s Legal Responsibilities Towards Employers

As an employee, I understand that I also have legal responsibilities towards my employer. It’s a two-way street! Here are some key areas where I strive to uphold my legal obligations:

  • Example: Our company has a policy requiring us to report any security breaches involving customer data. If I accidentally send a confidential email to the wrong person, I would immediately report it to my supervisor to minimize any potential damage.
  • Performing Assigned Duties to the Best of My Ability: I’m hired to do a specific job, and I have a legal responsibility to perform those duties diligently and to the best of my abilities. This includes meeting deadlines, maintaining quality standards, and being a productive member of the team.
  • Example: As a graphic designer, I ensure my designs meet the client’s specifications and deadlines. I actively participate in brainstorming sessions and utilize company resources efficiently to deliver high-quality work.
  • Maintaining Confidentiality: My employer entrusts me with sensitive information, be it client data, trade secrets, or internal company strategies. I have a legal obligation to keep this information confidential and avoid unauthorized disclosure.
  • Example: I wouldn’t discuss a new product launch with anyone outside the company until it’s officially announced. I would also be mindful about what information I post on social media that could be considered confidential.
  • Avoiding Conflicts of Interest: My primary loyalty lies with my employer. This means avoiding situations where my personal interests could conflict with my work responsibilities.
  • Example: I wouldn’t recommend a competitor’s software to a client, even if I personally use it. If I have a potential conflict, I would disclose it to my manager to avoid any ethical issues.

  • Honest and Fair Representation: If I’m representing the company in any way, be it attending a client meeting or participating in an industry conference, I’m obligated to present myself and the company in a professional and honest manner.
  • Example: During a client meeting, I would avoid making any false or misleading statements about the company’s products or services. I would also maintain a positive and professional demeanor throughout the interaction.
